Portrait of Timos Batinakis

Timos Batinakis was born in Athens in 1968. He began his studies in drawing and painting at the studio of Nikos Stefos before going on to study painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1988 to 1993, under the guidance of Panagiotis Tetsis.

Alongside his principal studies, he attended elective courses in sculpture, icon and fresco painting. During his first and fourth years, he was awarded scholarships by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).

His artistic practice is informed by extensive research into the techniques and materials of traditional painting, including pigments, mediums, varnishes and grounds. With particular interest in the materials employed by the great masters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Batinakis prepares the materials for his own work, drawing on the methods and traditions of the Old Masters.

From 1992 to 1998, he worked at Nikos Stefos’s preparatory studio for candidates applying to the Athens School of Fine Arts. Since 1999, he has maintained his own drawing and painting studio in Athens.

In 2007, Batinakis received the Academy of Athens Award for a painter under the age of forty. He has held three solo exhibitions and participated in more than sixty group exhibitions, including Art Athina in 2015 and 2017. His works are held in prominent private and public collections, as well as in the National Gallery of Greece.
