Product overview
All our Oil Colours are extra finely ground in either poppy seed oil or linseed oil refined according to the Marciana method—as painters did in 16th-century Venice. Their exceptional durability and fullness of chroma are clearly exhibited in the artworks that have endured since then, and further supported by modern studies.
They have all been designed by Timos Batinakis, who, as a painter with extensive experience, understands what artists need from an oil colour and the specific properties they seek from each individual one. The buttery consistency has been carefully developed through extensive study and experimentation. No stearates are used, in order to avoid future saponification; no zinc; and no siccatives, artificial or otherwise. The chroma is pushed to the maximum possible level through detailed experiments and rigorous testing.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The drying time of each Oil Colour is determined by the natural properties of its individual pigments, as no siccatives are used. Artists should consider which Oil Colours to place beneath or above others in order to avoid cracking caused by differences in expected drying times. If faster drying is required, artists can add their preferred siccative, while keeping in mind that siccatives may affect the final chroma—for example, causing yellowing in whites or blues.
You can check each Oil Colour in order to find out the relative drying time (very fast, fast, average, slow, very slow). The actual drying time (for example, in days) will naturally vary according to temperature, climate, season, and working conditions.
